Tradeoffs with an external USB Host:

The FPS-Tech USB Host provides an excellent alternative to external USB Host controllers. Advantages include:

  • Very low pin-count required for external PHY (as low as 3 pins!). External hosts require 20+ pins.
  • External PHYs are much cheaper than integrated external host controllers (32 cents vs. $10)
  • Reduced pin requirements lead to more localized on-chip signal routing
  • Small board real-estate requirements (3x3mm)
  • Out-of-box uClinux support!
  • Interfaces with readily available USB PHYs such as Fairchild USB1T11 Family and NXP ISP1105
